FAA Confirms Pilot Reported UFO over New Mexico; FBI is "Aware of the Reported Incident"

Statements released this week by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and American Airlines have confirmed that the pilot of American Airlines Flight 2292 (AAF 2292) did report a UFO over New Mexico last Sunday, and that, apparently, the report is of interest to the FBI.

Both statements were published to The Drive.

The FAA statement confirmed that the pilot of AAF 2292 had reported a UFO, while hinting at what the FAA might know, or not know, about the sighting.

A pilot reported seeing an object over New Mexico shortly after noon local time on Sunday, [February 21st], 2021. FAA air traffic controllers did not see any object in the area on their radarscopes.

Originally, the time was noted as 1:19 PM by Steve Douglass, the man who first recorded the report off of his radio scanner, although that discrepancy can be explained by the fact that Douglass was in the Central Time Zone and AAF 2292 would have been in the Mountain Time Zone, one hour behind.

Of particular interest is that air traffic controllers didn’t pick up the object from the ground, which rules out most terrestrial aircraft as an explanation, although not something normally undetectable by radar, like a balloon. However, the FAA requires the use of radar reflectors on large high altitude balloon flights to avoid collisions, which makes it less likely, given the description by the pilot, that it was something mundane like a weather balloon.

The other statement, released by American Airlines, is similar to the one published by ABC7 last Tuesday, but mentions FBI involvement in the case.

Following a debrief with our Flight Crew and additional information received, we can confirm this radio transmission was from American Airlines Flight 2292 on [February 21st]. For any additional questions on this, we encourage you to reach out to the FBI.

It is unclear what the FBI’s interest in the encounter might be, although the law enforcement agency does routinely investigate foreign incursions into the U.S.

"The FBI is aware of the reported incident," FBI Albuquerque field office spokesperson Frank Connor wrote in an email to Fox News. "While our policy is to neither confirm nor deny investigations, the FBI works continuously with our federal, state, local, and tribal partners to share intelligence and protect the public. Anyone who is aware of suspicious or criminal activity should contact their local law enforcement agency or the FBI."
