Amanda R. Woomer of Spook-Eats, “a blog dedicated to travel, food, and (of course) a little bit of paranormal thrown in just for fun,” recently published a comprehensive survey of haunted sites in western New York under the title A Haunted Atlas of Western New York: A Spooky Guide to the Strange & Unusual.

Woomer has compiled an exhaustive list of paranormal hotspots, including well over 100 sites across eight counties. Each entry contains a brief explanation of the location’s history and reported phenomena, along with helpful travel tips, such as whether or not the site is open to the public, hours of operation, tour prices, and handicap accessibility. Readers won’t find detailed records of investigations or claims of definitive evidence, but that’s not the point of this work.

As Woomer explains it,

If you venture down haunted roads at night, hunting urban legends…

If You wander through cemeteries and find yourself asking questions to no one in particular…

If you lace up your hiking boots and run along an overgrown trail, searching for shadows among the trees…

If you scan the landscape as you’re driving for any sign of Bigfoot…

If you’re desperate to believe in the bizarre to add a bit of spice to your life…This book is for you.

We’re moving away from the ghost stories around the campfire and seeking the unknown for ourselves.

A Haunted Atlas of Western New York is meant as a road map rather than a thesis on the paranormal. Ultimately, the solution to any mysteries contained within will be incumbent upon the reader to unravel for themselves. The book is a starting point for paranormal adventure, albeit one that is as easily enjoyed on the sofa as out on the trail of supernatural mysteries. It’s well-organized and exhaustively researched for ease of use, but it’s also entertainingly written in the playful style befitting a book created for fans of good-natured ghost hunts. With fun facts and interesting historical tidbits interspersed throughout, readers will enjoy this book regardless of whether or not they decide to venture into the unknown.

A Haunted Atlas of Western New York: A Spooky Guide to the Strange & Unusual is available for purchase in both paperback and e-book format from Amazon.
