Some believe that we're not necessarily the prime intelligence on this planet.  Author John Keel, for instance, came up with the idea that we share the earth with a category of beings he called 'ultraterrestrials'--a race of technologically and scientifically advanced sentients who supersede human civilization.  These beings are said to have been with us since our advent, and have manipulated humanity towards their own incomprehensible ends.
